Comme beaucoup de jeunes américains, il débute en motocross. Devenu l'un des meilleurs régionaux du Texas, il décide de quitter cette discipline en 1983 après un sérieux accident. Il poursuit sa carrière en Superbike aux États-Unis. C'est dans cette discipline qu'il rencontre Wayne Rainey qui va devenir son grand rival pour les années suivantes. Cette rivalité débute lors du championnat national 1987, titre finalement remporté par son adversaire.
Il rejoint l'Europe pour le championnat du monde en 1988. Débutant en 500cc chez Suzuki, il remporte son premier grand lors de la course inaugurale de la saison au Japon. Son rival Wayne Rainey rejoint lui le team de l'ex champion du monde Kenny Roberts chez Yamaha. Les années suivantes, la catégorie reine connait l'une des périodes les plus riches de son histoire. la concurence, le talent des Wayne Gardner, Michael Doohan, Eddie Lawson, Randy Mamola, Wayne Rainey et Kevin Schwantz offre des courses disputées.
Schwantz doit toutefois compenser le manque de puissance de sa Suzuki vis à vis des Yamaha et Honda de ses concurrents par un pilotage extrême qui le conduit souvent à la chute, mais également lui offre une grande popularité pour ses dépassements.
Il atteint finalement le sommet de sa carrière en 1993 en remportant le titre 500cc, avec au passage quatre victoires.
L'accumulation des blessures passées et l'accident qui laisse son rival Wayne Rainey paralysé lors du grand prix d'Italie le conduisent à mettre un terme à sa carrière avant le début de la saison 1995. Il termine ainsi sa carrière en grand prix sur 25 victoires. Il connait le rare honneur de voir son numéro fétiche, le 34, retiré par la fédération internationale.
Il fera ensuite une carrière en sport automobile, en NASCAR et en championnat de voitures de tourisme.

c'est aussi kévin, qui a "inventé" le changement d'angle sur la roue arrière, avant, tous chager les angles les deux roues au sol.

je pense aussi, qu'il à été le ROSSI de son temps, pas pour le nombre de titre ou de victoire, mais plus pour son pilotage spéctaculaire et incroyable à voir.....

dans le plus pur style joe bar (ca passe pas, ca passe pas, .......)

en tous cas, l'accident de rayney lui à mis un gros coup au moral, comme quoi on peut se battre comme des chiffoniers en courses et avoir le plus grand respect de l'autre..

Merci pour cette fiche sur le pilote qui m'a fait le plus rever.
En fait il a raccroché parce que les séquelles de ses trop nombreuses blessures aux mains ne lui permettaient plus d'exploiter comme il savait si bien le faire la puissance bestiale des 500 2TPS.Et la blessure de Rainey l'a poussé à remettre en question sa motivation.
J'ai pas fait de statistiques mais le nombre de fois ou il est tombé en tete de GP alors qu'il rendait un peu la main après avoir ait fait le trou sur ses poursuivants doit etre conséquent.

Je me rappelle une anecdote, alors que j'étais au GP d'Allemagne à Hockenheim, le long de la ligne droite des stands.
Schwantz sort du S qui mène à la ligne droite, un pilote le précède. Je ne sais plus qui exactement. Dans la ligne droite Kevin s'offre "le luxe" de doubler le gars devant lui.... en wheeling ! si si je vous assure, en wheeling :-)

Mettez vous à la place de l'autre pilote, couché sur sa moto et qui voit un extra-terrestre le doubler roue avant pointant vers le ciel.
A sa place je pense que je me serais arrêté me demandant ce que je fous là.

Salut a tous sa fait plaisir de voir que kevin n’est pas oublier et de voir qu’on se rappelle avec nostalgie de la bonne époque (quoi que en ce moment avec rossi stoner lorenzo et pédrosa on est bien servie :) ) quand a moi j’ai découvert le motoGP et kevin au travers de moto journal en 1992 et a enregistrer le gp depuis 1995 jusqu'à l’apparition de des GP sur le net en 2000.

Frustrer de pas avoir assister a la grande époque j’ai ressorti mais cassette vidéo poussiéreuse acheter un tout l’équipement pour les numériser
Je suis entrain de les mettre sur disque dur (125_250_500).

J’aimerais savoir si l’un de vous et en possession des saisons de 500 de 1990 a 1993 je n’est pas le moyen d’acheter (chômage depuis le moi août:pleure: ) les gp juste faire du troc
