McGuinness does it again on day two but Anstey also shines

John McGuinness was once again the fastest man on the island as the IOM TT hit day two of practice hitting an average of more than 128mph.

The HM Plant Honda rider beat his practice time on Monday by almost 30 seconds, showing he is already remembering what the tricky 37.73-mile circuit is all about as he recorded a 17:37.09.

Hydrex Honda’s Guy Martin was 13 seconds behind McGuinness in second place with Stobart Motorsports Ian Lougher securing third in the Superbike practice lap.

Bruce Anstey was the man to beat in the Supersport category with his lap of 18:39.47.

Kawasaki man Ryan Farquhar was second, just over eight seconds behind with Ian Lougher securing another third, this time for Team Blackhorse Racing.

Anstey also headed the Superstock timesheets at the end of his lap with a time of 18:03.70, also going 125.338 in the process on his GSX-R1000.
Martin Finnegan secured second in a time of 18:24.70 on his MV Agusta 1000 with Peter Beale rider Paul Hunt in third.

In the sidecars Nick Crowe and Dan Sayle managed 114.208mph around the Island and took 19:49.31 to do so on their Honda 600RR, just over two minutes slower than McGuinness on his Superbike.

In second was Allan Schofield and Peter Founds, who were almost a minute down on the leading pair on a 20:48.10 lap.

Neary Racing’s Simon Neary and Stuart Bond were third 14 seconds behind the second pair.

McGuinness hits 129mph

http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/5857/homeu37520publichtmlpacvh6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

The 130mph Isle of Man TT lap gets tantalisingly closer. John McGuinness clocked a stunning 129mph lap tonight (Thursday) on the HM Plant Honda in practice for Saturday’s superbike race.

McGuinness had run fourth for most of the first lap but was the quickest on the road from Cronk y Mona through to the Grandstand as he started his flying lap. He lapped at 17m 32.24s, 129.084mph, 7.5s quicker than Guy Martin on the Hydrex Honda and just outside his own lap record of 129.54mph set last year.

As he stopped in the pits to swap over to his superstock bike McGuinness said: “There were so many flies out there. I pulled a tear-off and pulled two at once so I could barely see where I as going on that second lap. The track was really dusty and I had a few slides here there and everywhere as well.”

Guy Martin clocked 128.166 on the Hydrex Honda and Ian Lougher did 128.14mph on the Stobart Honda. HM Plant Honda’s Ian Hutchison was fourth quickest with a lap of 127.54mph ahead of Martin Finnegan’s Klaffi Honda (127.29mph).

Michael Rutter was slowed by a slipping clutch on his first lap with the MSS Kawasaki. He went out on his supersport bike for two laps while the crew rebuilt the clutch. He did 125.00mph on the superbike – the first time he managed two laps in one session on the ZX-10.

Steve Plater did an amazing 121.38mph on the AIM Yamaha – the fastest ever lap for a TT newcomer. He said: “I’m really comfy on the superbike – it’s the most stable of my three bikes as you’d expect for a full race bike - and it didn’t feel like I was pushing that hard.”

Bruce Anstey was plagued with handling problems on the Relentless Suzuki superbike but topped the Supersport leaderboard with a lap of 122.61mph. Guy Martin was second quickest from Ryan Farquhar and Ian Lougher.

McGuinness and Hutchinson both went out late in the session on their 600s and completed a short lap so their laps of 120.24mph and 119.9mph respectively were not really indicative of their true speed.

Anstey was also fastest in Superstock with a 125.10mph lap on the GSX-R1000. McGuinness was second quickest from Finnegan on the MV Agusta.

Fire red-flags TT practice

http://www.motorcyclenews.com/upload/194815/images/TTLogo.jpg (http://www.motorcyclenews.com/upload/194815/images/TTLogo.jpg)

Friday night’s practice was red-flagged at the Isle of Man TT due to fire on the course following a three-rider crash at the Black Dub, involving Belgian rider Michael Weynand, Ballymoney’s Victor Gilmore and Jim Hodson from Wigan.

According to eye-witness reports, Weynand’s Bolliger Kawasaki hit the wall, splitting the fuel tank and the contents set fire to the ivy and tree branches overhanging the wall.

Practice was halted at 18.50 while a local fire tender was despatched to deal with the blaze and a road sweeper to clear all the debris.

Weynand was taken to hospital to be treated for an ankle injury. Gilmore had a suspected shoulder injury while Hodson escaped without injury.

TT rookie Keith Amor arrived at the crash site as it happened. He said: “I’d followed the Kawasaki guy but backed off a bit just before the Glen Helen section. Then I saw marshals running and the yellows out just as I arrived on the corner.

I braked as hard as I could and there was debris everywhere. I saw two guys on the track on the right and the Kawasaki guy on the left. And the ivy and trees were already burning. I stopped the other side of the accident because it was obvious they’d red-flag it.” John Barton also arrived as the marshals started dealing with the accident. He said: "I just saw the black smoke as I came on the corner and thought, ‘what’s gone on here?’ It was carnage. The road was littered with rubbish I had to thread through at walking pace.”

Practice resumed an hour later.

Before the crash brought out the red flag, Guy Martin had stopped at Crosby.

First race cancelled at Isle of Man TT

John McGuinness

Today’s superbike race at the Isle of Man TT was called off due to bad weather and will now take place on Monday, starting at 10.45am.

All the riders and bikes were sat on the Glencrutchery Road waiting for the midday start. The information board at the head of the grid warned riders of damp patches at several points on the track but only at the verges of the roads so all the teams were set to go on slicks tyres.

But with minutes to go trackside marshals reported oil at the road at Bungalow and a travelling marshal was despatched to investigate. By the time the oil was cleared the start had been delayed half an hour and then reports suggested the weather was closing in and with visibility limited on the Mountain, the organisers decided to postpone the day’s racing until Monday.

John McGuinness said: “It’s unbelievable. You build yourself up all year for this moment and they delay the start by half and hour and then call it off. It’s disappointing but safety is paramount.”

One of McGuinness’ main rivals Guy Martin added: “Conditions were not perfect but I guess the guys at the sharp end (the organisers) know what they are doing. The last thing any of us want is to start the Centenary TT with people getting injured in tricky conditions. They’ve done the right thing.”

Behind the scenes though there was a wrangle over the use of cut slick tyres. The TT rules specifically ban the use of hand cut tyres which riders use when the road is damp. It’s not possible to use slicks because of the high heat build up on the super fast sections of the TT course.

Dunlop don’t manufacturer moulded intermediate tyres so it would have meant their leading runners like McGuinness, Ian Hutchinson, Ian Lougher and Martin would have been forced to run on slicks if the race had started on time with the road still damp in places, something that would clearly compromising their safety.

Relentless Suzuki pair Bruce Anstey and Adrian Archibald would have been able to run Pirelli’s moulded intermediates.

Clerk of the Course Neil Hanson said: “The rules, which make it clear there are no cut slicks, have been circulated to all the teams and no one has ever complained until this morning.”

McGuinness wasn’t happy by the TT organisers sticking to the letter of the law.

He said: “I wasn’t keen on racing in the damp but we would have needed intermediates.

For some insane reason though, we’re not allowed to run cut slicks.”
Read Wednesday’s MCN, available on June 6, 2007, for more details.
Revised schedule:
Roads close on Monday, June 4 at 10.00am with the Superbike TT starting at 10.45am with the first Sidecar race following that.

The Superstock race scheduled for Monday has been put back to Tuesday, starting at 12.15, followed by the Lap of Honour.

McGuinness wins race one at Isle of Man TT

http://www.motorcyclenews.com/upload/194891/images/John%20McGuinness%20Pacemaker%20pic.jpg (http://www.motorcyclenews.com/upload/194891/images/John%20McGuinness%20Pacemaker%20pic.jpg)

It wasn’t the most closely-fought Isle of Man TT ever, it wasn’t even the most dramatic but it was the opening race of the Centenary TT races and by far one of the most popular victories when John McGuinness crossed the line to win Monday’s six-lap Superbike TT.

McGuinness isn’t normally the most emotional person but he was in tears after chalking up the 12th TT win of his career and he did it in the most emphatic fashion, crossing the line over 25 seconds ahead of second placed Guy Martin.

It wasn’t surprising McGuinness was overcome in the winner’s enclosure as he pulled off his Shoei lid.

The build up to the year’s races has been the most intense ever and the HM Plant Honda rider admitted he felt the pressure.

Early in practice he talked of carrying 10 tons of concrete on his back and after the race he said: “I feel like I’ve had 18 tons of sand lifted off my back this afternoon.

“There was all the hype since last winter, who’s doing this, who’s doing that. There’s so many good bikes and good riders so I knew it was going to be tough.

“I know everyone takes the piss out of my weight and I’m not getting any younger. I knew the young guys were snapping at me so I’ve trained hard all winter and never felt better.”

Competitors set off knowing the were damp patches around the course so there was never going to be any sensational record laps from the standing start as we’ve seen in the past. But McGuinness had almost two seconds in hand over Martin by the time they had rushed though the first timing point at Glen Helen and he gradually edged clear.

McGuinness said: “It was damp and there wasn’t much grip. I saw 2.5secs then 2.8secs on my boards and I kept pushing on.
“Then we got to the pit stops and it’s testament to my boys that have been with for the past couple of years that they turned me around really quick and gave me an extra cushion.”

Everyone talked about the potential 130mph lap and McGuinness said it’s still possible – but wasn’t a remote possibility in today’s conditions.

“I’m sure we can do it,” said McGuinness, “especially if the weather stays like this for the Senior. You know, you get that lack of adhesion flag and you’ve no idea what to expect, whether it’s a puddle that could have you down or just a damp patch.

“They’re not the conditions I like so I was being a bit cautious and to be honest I was shocked to do 128mph on the second lap so yeah, the speeds will come but they weren’t on today.

“I was real tense out there at the start and on the first lap I was still a bit nervous, hitting jumps wrong and getting sideways.

“I had my feet off the pegs at Rhencullen and at the 13th Milestone I had a big slide and that really scared me so it wasn’t all plain sailing out there.
“But I just wanted to win a Centenary TT race and I’ve never seen so many people out of the course. It was fantastic and I just hope the race did a good job for the TT. I felt like I was part of something special today, something to be really proud of.”

Martin was second on the Hydrex Honda, his second career TT podium after finishing third in the 2005 Senior TT.

He said: I didn’t come here to make up the numbers but I’ve watched all the TT videos so I’m not going to sit here and be miserable. I’m happy to be second but I want to win.”

Martin said after the North West he thought some harsh overtaking moves he put on McGuinness had fried the HM Plant Honda rider’s brain for the Isle of Man TT but he admitted he was wrong.

He said: “He’s the man isn’t he? My problem was I didn’t push hard enough on the first lap. I thought John would be a bit more cautious on the first lap too.

“I should have gone straight past Lougher when I caught him on the road but I sat watching what he was doing for too long.

“Once I got him I caught Ian Hutchinson and Martin Finnegan on the road and I was screaming at them through my visor to get out of the way.
“I’ve not won a TT yet and I’ll not be happy until I win a six lap TT but we’ve got some more races this week so let’s see how it goes.”
Hutchinson was third to complete the Honda 1-2-3.

He said: “I set off sand it was damp everywhere. Bruce Anstey broke down in front of me so I got the yellow flag there, then it was damp at Greeba and Glen Helen and I struggled to get my head around it all.
“By the time I got into a rhythm after the it stops John was long gone and Guy was ahead of me on the road.”

Martin Finnegan finished fourth on the Klaffi Honda and said he’s take it too easy in the early going, wary of the damp conditions.
Ian Lougher was fifth, complaining that the handling of his Stobart Honda had turned from being perfect enough during practice to lap at over 128mph to lacking stability everywhere.

Bruce Anstey went out on the first lap when a £40 ignition amplifier failed on the Relentless Suzuki.

Rutter’s MSS Kawasaki blew up and Nigel Beattie didn’t even start due to a broken gear lever.

McGuinness victory makes him the third most successful rider in TT history behind Joey Dunlop (26 wins) and Mike Hailwood (14 wins). McGuinness said: “I’m really pleased about that. I’m now ahead of Hizzy (Steve Hislop 11 wins), (Phillip) McCallen (11 wins) and Ago (Giacomo Agostini – 10 wins) so I’m not doing so bad.

Isle of Man TT: Anstey breaks records on way to Superstock victory

http://www.motorcyclenews.com/upload/194901/images/pacemakerTT%20PRACTICEBruce%20Anstey.jpg (http://www.motorcyclenews.com/upload/194901/images/pacemakerTT%20PRACTICEBruce%20Anstey.jpg)
Bruce Anstey

New Zealander Bruce Anstey broke the race and lap record on the way to winning the Superstock race this afternoon at the Isle of Man TT.

Anstey completed the four laps of the 37.73mile circuit in 1hr 11min 629sec, more than a minute quicker that the record set last year.

He also broke the lap record on lap one to record 128.297mph and then broke it again on the next lap with a 128.349mph.

After the race the Suzuki GSX-R1000 rider said: "The bike was going really well. I was quite nervous but it went really well for me.

"That last lap it was quite weird because I got held up quite a bit (by later starters).

Following yesterday's Superbike victory, John McGuinness got his chance on the podium again in second.

He said: "The lap speeds were sensational. I felt I had made a really good effort.

"I think my bike was good enough to do the job but the rider on it wasn't good enough."

In third place was Ian Hutchinson. He was given a scare and went down to third but reclaimed his slot to get on the podium.
Lap four:

Giong into the final third of the circuit, Anstey increases his lead to 35.46secs.

At the Sulby Speedtrap Anstey is recorded at exactly the same speed as lap one, 182.900mph. Hutchinson was second fastest although third in the race with 178mph with McGuinness next at 175.2. BSB's Steve Plater is 16th.

Anstey looks on target to take the quickest total race time as he extends his lead to 29secs despite being held up by later starters. With just 28 laps left McGuinness is still second with Hutchinson third 54secs down on the leader.

Mark Parrett moves up to fifth on his Yamaha R1.

Lap three:

Isle of Man TT: Record breaking Hutchinson wins Junior Supersport

http://www.motorcyclenews.com/upload/194950/images/pacemakerHutchinson.jpg (http://www.motorcyclenews.com/upload/194950/images/pacemakerHutchinson.jpg)

The records fell again this morning as Ian Hutchinson rode to victory on his Honda CBR600.

Hutchinson took the lead from New Zealander Bruce Anstey in dramatic fashion after the lap two pitstops when Anstey's GSX-R600 failed to restart immediately. Anstey had been leading from John McGuinness with Hutchinson third looking like a repeat of yesterday's superstock race.

HM Plant rider, Hutchinson, took the race record, knocking 34.62 off the record to complete the four lap 37.73 mile race in 1hour 13min 28.11sec.
After the race Hutchinson said: "Wow! The first two laps I saw P3 and thought 'what is it with P3 I could at least get a second.

"I'm over the moon. HM PLant have given me a chance and I'm just glad I have got my fitness back. I can't believe it."

John McGuinness took another second and his third podium in as many days. He rode a solid race and stayed second throughout.

He said: "I really enjoyed the race. I tried my best from the start and had some good runs over the mountain. Hutchinson deserves it but I had a really bad run past some of the slower riders and got held up."

third place Guy Martin is now the lap holder after McGuinness, Anstey and then himself went faster on the final lap. He recorded a 125.161 and he said: "It's good but I have not won 'owt by it. I didn't think I could ride the old girl (his Honda 600) any harder."

Isle Of Man TT : Molyneux gagne la catégorie Sidecar

http://www.motards-online.com/competition/images/illus/TTsidecarCentenary_01.jpg (http://www.motards-online.com/competition/images/illus/TTsidecarCentenary_01.jpg)

Dave Molyneux Driver, TT Sidecar Race A P1 :

HM Plant Honda Team Manager Neil Tuxworth :

http://www.motards-online.com/competition/images/illus/TTsidecarCentenary_02.jpg (http://www.motards-online.com/competition/images/illus/TTsidecarCentenary_02.jpg)

http://www.motards-online.com/competition/images/illus/TTSBKCentenary_02.jpg (http://www.motards-online.com/competition/images/illus/TTSBKCentenary_02.jpg)

HM Plant Team Manager, Neil Tuxworth :

John McGuinness film in progress

A film about the life of TT legend John McGuinness is being filmed on the Isle of Man this week.

The film is being produced by Ridley Scott’s production company and was on location during the Centenary TT for atmosphere and racing footage.

The film stars local Onchan boy Peter Castellucci who stars as the young John McGuinness who travels to the island for the first time to watch his hero Joey Dunlop.

Andrew Barratt producer of the film said: “Peter is playing McGuinness as a child when he dreamed of competing in the TT.

We filmed him on Victoria Pier looking out to sea at the Steam Packet ferry – just like John had done when he was a boy. He dreamed of running away on the ferry and competing in the world’s most famous motorcycle race.”

Eight-year-old Castellucci said: “It was really good – and exciting. I’d like to be in another film soon – something like Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean.”
