Barber Motorsports Park continues to have discussions with World Superbike Championship organizers about a possible 2008 date, and they expect an answer shortly.

“They’ve got a great product and we’ve got one of the best venues in this country and we’d like to bring the two together,” Gene Hallman, the president of Zoom Motorsports which has promotional rights to the facility outside of Birmingham, Alabama, said. “We’ve got a few business issues to resolve.”

In a Friday afternoon phone conversation, Hallman said, “Relative to where we are, we are actively in discussion with World Superbike about the event in ’08. We’re working through the business terms as we speak. It’s not a long list of things that need to be resolved. As a matter of fact, the list is rather short, but we’re not there yet.

“And our intent is to try to resolve any outstanding issues in the next week or so. Time is running short. The FIM needs to certify the schedule and we need to begin work on the event for next year. There is regular communication between Maurizio (Flammini) and ourselves and we hope to know one way or the other in the next week.” Flammini is one of the owners of FGSports, which owns the promotional rights to the World Superbike Championship.

Hallman said neither side had a “hard and fast deadline. In our last conversation with Maurizio, we’ve got days, not weeks to resolve this, because we’ve got to get the calendar for next year. He’s never given us a deadline.”

Originally Hallman thought the decision would have been made by now. “It’s a rather complex business arrangement. These things are not done quickly.”
Barber is one of two tracks vying for a World Superbike race in 2008. The other is Miller Motorsports Park. Alan Wilson, CEO and general manager of MMP, said yesterday he expected an answer by August 1 on a possible 2008 date. It isn't known whether World Superbike organizers would agree to allow both races on the calendar in the return of the series to the U.S. for the first time since 2004.
