History

Suzuki started motorcycle Grand Prix racing in 1960 at the dawn of the Japanese Motorcycle Industry. The team led the way in early two-stroke development and won its first rider and manufacturer championship victories in 1962 with German rider Ernst Degner on a 50cc machine.

As one of the Japanese manufacturers, Suzuki has been a prominent force in the Blue Riband 500cc and now MotoGP class since the early 1970s. It has achieved a string of race wins and pole positions as well as seven manufacturers’ titles and five riders’ championships. The last riders’ crown was won by Kenny Roberts Jr in 2000.

Many of the world’s most popular riders have become synonymous with Suzuki over the years, including Kevin Schwantz and double world champion Barry Sheene. The road racing pedigree also includes many famous wins at the Isle of Man TT, including the only Japanese rider to win at the historic circuit, Mitsuo Itoh, who later went on to become head of Suzuki’s racing depar
