Team Suzuki Alstare news
2008 Superbike World Championship
Round 6, Miller Motorsports Park, Salt Lake City, USA
Friday 30th May
Circuit: 4.907 kms
Conditions: Dry,mostly sunny 21-24C.
TEAM SUZUKI ALSTARE LEARNING THEIR WAY.
![](http://www.alstare.com/var/ezflow_site/storage/images/galleries/superbike/usa-sbk-friday/ap2_3438/14963-1-eng-GB/AP2_3438_medium.jpg) Team Suzuki Alstare riders Fonsi Nieto, Yukio Kagayama together with Team Alstare Suzuki rider Max Neukirchner used the first day of practice and qualifying at the Miller Motorsports Park to learn their way round the track and get used to racing at high altitude. The 4.907 kilometre circuit is about 1500 metres above sea level and all the bikes are suffering a drop in performance as a result. At the end of the day, Fonsi had qualified sixth, Yukio seventh and Max fifteenth. Series leader Troy Bayliss (Ducati) is on provisional pole, ahead of fellow countryman Troy Corser (Yamaha), with Carlos Checa (Honda) third and Jake Smrz (Ducati) fourth.
Fonsi - 6th, 1:49.895
I’m happy with today, even though we had some problems with my my favourite bike and that caused us to lose some time. I like this track - it’s not difficult to learn and it’s safe, but it is difficult to shave off that last fraction of a second when you are trying to go faster. I think the high altitude is affecting the bike, but it’s the same for everybody, so we just have to get down to it.
Yukio - 7th, 1:50.135
It’s a very big, wide track, so it’s a bit difficult to find a good line at the moment. In the afternoon, I began to find it a bit more easy and it’s just a case of putting in many, many laps and learning this circuit as fast as I can. I think the grip level is quite good and although the high altitude is affecting the bike, I have finished the day in a positive mood.
Max -15th, 1:50.929
I’m a little angry because I’m finding this track difficult - especially in the first split where I know I’m losing time. The second and third splits are not too bad, it’s just the first one where I’m suffering and I think this is because of some chassis problems. We changed the bike from the morning session to the afternoon qualifying and I think maybe we went the wrong way, so tomorrow we’ll change it more back to where we started from and work from there. The altitude doesn’t seem to affect the top speed so much, but I feel it is affecting the acceleration out of the corners. We have some work to do tomorrow, but I’m sure my team will manage it OK.
Friday qualifying
1 Bayliss (Aus-Ducati) 1:49.394, 2 Corser (Aus-Yamaha) 1:49.636, 3 Checa (E-Honda) 1:49.732, 4 Smrz (CZ-Ducati) 1:49.758, 5 Fabrizio (I-Ducati) 1:49.872, 6 Fonsi Nieto (Suzuki Alstare) 1:49.895, 7 Yukio Kagayama (J-Suzuki Alstare) 1:50.135, 8 Xaus (E-Ducati) 1:50.230, 9 Badavoni (I-Kawasaki) 1:50.269. 10 Haga (J-Yamaha) 1:50.349, 15 Max Neukirchner (D-Alstare Suzuki) 1:50.929,

MAX JUST MISSES SUPERPOLE VICTORY!
Team Alstare Suzuki rider Max Neukirchner saw his dream of Superpole victory at the Miller Motorsports Park dashed by Carlos Checa (Honda) in 16-rider shoot-out. Although Max had put in a superb lap of 1:48.504, substantially quicker then anybody in regular qualifying, Checa managed to blast round the 4.907 kilometre circuit in a time of 1:48.193. Team Suzuki Alstare riders Yukio Kagayama and Fonsi Nieto ended Superpole with the eighth and thirteenth quickest times and so will start from the second and fourth rows of the grid respectively.
Max - 2nd, 1:48.504
Throughout qualifying we’ve been having some problems with the race tyres but my team worked very hard and we found a good race set-up, and that makes me happy. I had problems with the first sector, so this morning I watched Ben Spies on the track and saw the lines he was using. I tried some of them later and found them much better. My Superpole lap was great - the bike was working really well and now I’m happily looking forward to the races tomorrow.
Yukio - 8th, 1:49.394
In the first sector, my bike had a nervous feeling and it was difficult to push as hard as I would normally. So I rode it a bit safely because I didn’t want to crash, but that meant I lost some time and ended eighth. Today the final sector of the track was better then yesterday, but there are some places where my bike has a bit of a bumping feeling, so we will see if we can improve it in the warm-up tomorrow. I’m not happy with Superpole today, but the races are long and anything can happen tomorrow.
Fonsi - 13th, 1:49.942
Superpole has not been good for me and this afternoon, when it was hot, I could not go fast or turn the bike easily. Also, I didn’t find good grip and so I am not happy with finishing thirteenth. This morning was quite good and I was able to be fast. We will have a lot of work to do tonight and a lot of data to analyse to see if we can make some improvements for tomorrow.
Final qualifying
1 Checa (E-Honda) 1:48.193, 2 Max Neukirchner (D-Alstare Suzuki) 1:48.504, 3 Bayliss (Aus-Ducati) 1:48.604, 4 Fabrizio (I-Ducati) 1:48.800, 5 Corser (Aus-Yamaha) 1:48.975, 6 Xaus (E-Ducati) 1:49.181, 7 Laconi (F-Kawasaki) 1:49.206, 8 Yukio Kagayama (J-Suzuki Alstare) 1:49.394, 9 Biaggi (I-Ducati) 1:49.479, 10 Haga (J-Yamaha) 1:49.735, 13 Fonsi Nieto (E-Suzuki Alstare) 1:49.942,
