Rossi and Camel Yamaha have won five races so far this season, two more than next best Marco Melandri and Loris Capirossi and three more than championship leader Hayden - but the Kentuckian feels he deserves to be in the title driving seat as the season reaches its climax.
"Well over the season so far I've had more points (than Rossi)," he said. "Sure, he's had some bad luck but I've had a bit of bad luck too - problems that were out of my control - and I've hung on and brought it to the finish.
"Sure I'd like to say that I'd strung together three or four wins in a row and had nine or ten wins - but this year even Valentino hasn't exactly dominated. There's a lot of good riders on good equipment and it'd be hard for anyone to put a ten-win season together.
"I'd like to have won some more races but I've had a lot of podiums, I am leading the BMW (qualifying) Award and I am leading the points so I feel like I deserve to be in this position," he underlined.
